Adults – There are 2 class options:
1.Room 200 (lounge) resuming the discussion of prayer for a few weeks followed by a study of Psalms for the remainder of the year led by Kevin Christ and Al Holder THIS CLASS IS NOT MEETING ON SEPT 1
2. Room 202 (end of choir room) short term studies with a variety of facilitators.
SEPT/OCT: Cheryl Moles will lead a look at the Great Ends of the Church – the guiding principles for PCUSA church – and how they are being lived out at CPC
Kids Hope needs adult mentors and prayer partners for our ministry with Deming School. See Linda Riggins for more information.
The Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes are being sponsored by the Deacons and Youth Group. These boxes will bless children all over the world at Christmas. Items will be collected throughout the summer and fall and then the boxes will be assembled by the youth group and taken to a collection point for shipping. We are currently collecting toys and “wow” items. A complete list is in the bulletin. Please bring your items and place them in the basket in fellowship hall.
A “Recycling Center” is in fellowship hall near the ramp hallway. Please recycle materials if possible rather than tossing them in a trashcan. Bins are marked for specific items (paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic); we can no longer put all items in one container. Thanks for helping Central be better stewards.
Child Protection Training – On Sunday, September 8 from 12:00 to 2 pm, Central Presbyterian will offer a training workshop on how to keep our precious children safe at church. This training is mandatory for all church employees who come into contact with children on the job. All volunteers that teach Sunday School, help with youth group or Parents’ Night Out and in other children/youth activities are strongly encouraged to attend. We also will welcome any parents and members of the church at large who wish to participate. Rev. Mike Riggins and Christian Educator Cheryl Moles will lead this training. We will review our church’s child-care and other policies, offer walk-around teaching on our various evacuation plans (severe weather, human threat, etc.), share what we hope you might consider telling your children about what they can do to protect themselves, equip our staff to recognize “Groomers” and more.This is a difficult and sensitive subject. but we absolutely must address it. Please consider joining us as we do.
This session is for those that did not attend in May. A light lunch and childcare will be provided. If possible, please notify the church office that you plan to attend.
The Annual HOLYPALOOZA joint worship with Centenary United Methodist Church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and United Campus Ministries will be on September 15 at Centenary.
SERVICEPALOOZA – The service component of the event includes
1. collecting items to fill holiday baskets for the 14th and Chestnut Community Center. The items needed are canned pie filling, graham crackers, canned pumpkin, evaporated milk, aluminum pie pans, instant mashed potatoes and gravy (can or jar). Please bring your items anytime before the 15th and place them in the grocery cart.
2. collecting class supplies for college students to be distributed through United Campus Ministries: college ruled notebooks, college ruled loose leaf paper, sturdy folders, 3 ring binders, mechanical pencils, sharpies, black ink pens (that click). These can be brought to CPC before the 15th or taken to Centenary on the 15th.
SALT SHAKER DINNERS – The sign up for Salt Shaker dinners is posted on the bulletin board in fellowship hall. Participants attend a dinner with a small group of 7 or 8 people each season (fall, winter, spring) to help old and new friends share fellowship and get to know each other better. The groups are created by “shaking” names to create the schedule. Each person/couple contributes an assigned part of the meal with one serving as host. See Eunice Pate or a CL member for more information.
Request from the Personnel Committee:
September marks the one-year anniversary of Mike Riggins call to be our minister. To better support his growth in our church community, and help improve his message, we are asking all church members and attendees to fill out a review form and add any comments that they feel are appropriate to the bottom of the document. Forms will be mailed or are available in fellowship hall and should be placed in the bright colored box. The Personnel committee will compile the information and share with Mike. We ask that all forms be returned by the end of September. Thank you.
CL will be sponsoring a GENTLY USED ITEMS AND BOOK SALE on Saturday, Nov. 2nd. It is time to start cleaning out closets, garages, attics and any place else you have been stashing things. Remember—GENTLY USED! Be sure to watch for more information about this event.
In addition, John Whalen’s famous breakfast will be served that morning!
