A joyous celebration of life for Barbara Wilkinson will be at 1:30 pm on Saturday, October 18 in the Central Sanctuary. Condolences may be expressed to the family in fellowship hall following the service.
2014 marks the 500th birthday of the founder of Presbyterianism, John Knox. To celebrate Reformation Sunday on October 26th, the Christian Nurture Commission will serve a Scottish lunch following worship. The menu is mince and tatties (beef or turkey on mashed potatoes), peas and/or carrots, green salad, scones and shortbread. Freewill donations will be accepted. A short informational program about John Knox will be presented.
The Strategic Planning Task Force requests that responses to the third question be completed by Sunday, 10/19/2014. Written replies can be received at church; oral replies can be received by task force members during the fellowship time; and electronic replies can be entered online at www.thcpc.org (follow the “About Us” menu to the “Strategic Planning” tag).
The Mission Committee asks for special donations for the Lighthouse Mission this month. Items may be brought any Sunday and placed in the grocery cart. Personal needs: deodorants, disposable razors, shaving cream, shampoo and combs (no toothbrushes, toothpaste and lotions); Food needs: salad dressings, mayo, salt, pepper, sugar, barbeque sauce, any canned goods, ketchup, mustard, drink mixes with sugar.
7th Cents Youth Group will have a Fall Celebration on Sunday, October 19 from 12:30 – 3:30pm at Hawthorne Park. Youth and their families will enjoy lunch at the Dogwood Shelter. Hamburgers, hot dogs and some sides will be provided. You may bring a side dish or desserts if you like. Please let Amanda Davis know that you will be attending.
Sunday School classes meet each week at 9:30 am. Preschool – room 108; Elementary – room 202; Middle School and High School – room 201; Adults and Young Adults: Coffee and Conversation – FH classroom A; Christian Studies – FH classroom B; Christian Parenting – FH Classroom C.

Trinity Lutheran Church will celebrate its 90th Anniversary on October 26 with a 4:00 pm Worship Service and dinner at the MCL Banquet Hall at 5:30. Dinner tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children 3 – 11. Please make a reservation by October 5.
The 11th annual Evening of Music and Chocolate will be Saturday, November 8 at 7:00 pm at Central Christian Church with guest artists Brent McPike, Solly Burton, and Carolyn Dutton. Advance tickets are $15; $18 at the door. Proceeds go to the music ministry of the church and United Campus Ministries. Call 812-877-9959 for tickets.
The Crop Walk/Run 2014 sponsored by United Campus Ministries will be on Sunday, October 19. Participants gather at UCM (321 N 7th St) for registration at 1:00 pm and the 5K walk/run at 2:00 pm. The goal is for 200 participants to raise $5000. 25% of funds raised will be distributed to Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, 14th and Chestnut, and UCM food pantry. 75% helps families around the world through Church World Service.

Report to Congregation about Sculpture Project from the Fine Arts Commission

For over a year, the Fine Arts Commission has explored possibilities for a sculpture in front of the church—our church’s contribution to the Terre Haute “Arts Corridor.” Over the course of our explorations, we have benefited greatly from the advice of Mary Kramer, who is Executive Director of Wabash Valley Art Spaces. She has also advised Indiana State and others in commissioning sculptures for the ISU campus and the community. Over this year we have gone through the following steps.
- Four commission members and husbands traveled around the state looking at outdoor sculpture in New Harmony, Bedford, and Bloomington (early October 2013)
- Commission members drafted a “Thoughts and Visions” statement describing images that had caught our interest and touched our souls (February 2014). Just as music can connect us with God, so can inspiring works of visual art. Additionally for our statement, we selected Bible passages that might inspire and support the piece.
- The Fine Arts Commission contacted three sculptors – one from Bloomington, one from Bedford, and one local – asking them to make a proposal for a Central Presbyterian Church sculpture. With the help of Mary Kramer, we developed expectations for their proposals, including a model of the proposed piece. Also using her advice, we set a total budget for the pieces at $30,000 and offered a fee of $500 plus travel expenses to everyone who made a proposal. These proposals were due by early September. All three sculptors that we contacted made proposals.
- During the month of September 2014, each of the three sculptors came to the church to meet with the Fine Arts Commission, brought their model for us temporarily to keep and display, and provided written details of their proposal. During these meetings, commission members had opportunities to ask questions and to further discuss a preferred site in front of the church.
Hence, over the last month, you may have seen some unusual items, photos, and stone pieces in the middle classroom section adjoining the Fellowship Hall. These were all left by our three candidates for us to view, ask questions about, and comment. At the September Session Meeting, the Commission reported on the status of the project and reviewed with the Session the proposals of the first two sculptors, allowing Session members to give feedback about the first two proposals and about how we would proceed after a candidate was selected. The sculpture discussion ended with the Commission’s promise to make a recommendation to the Session of one of the three sculptors, after receiving the model and proposal of the third candidate. The Session members were urged to discuss the project with interested congregation members, elicit feedback, and direct questions toward members of the Fine Arts Commission.
Then, Wednesday evening (10/8/14), the Fine Arts Commission recommended one candidate as the sculptor to work further with on the sculpture project and provided a rationale to the Session concerning our choice. Feedback from the September Session meeting was strongly considered in making this recommendation. However, since the September Session meeting we heard about concerns from church members, both identified and anonymous. Some questioned the $30,000 budget in comparison with the other financial needs of the church. Others seemed not to want a sculpture at all. Following the recommendation of the Fine Arts Commission and a discussion of comments from church members, the Session voted to continue with the sculpture project and in working with the selected sculptor on a design that would be presented to the congregation at a later time. The Session also said that the Fine Arts Commission should make clear to everyone that financial support of the sculpture was optional and should only be considered in addition to higher-priority church contributions, such as church operation, building improvements, and mission.
The Commission was pleased with the positive response of the Session and felt as if the evening’s discussion had served to answer some of the questions and concerns that were being raised. There are subsequent steps that must be taken before giving a sculptor the go-ahead, including finalizing the design and raising funds. Several Session members suggested that we should proceed slowly from this point. Even so, the Fine Arts Commission had the sense of strong support from the Session for the project. There was excitement about the project and evidence that Session members felt as if a beautiful and spiritually uplifting sculpture would make a positive contribution to our church and community and would also support other efforts of ISU etc. in making downtown Terre Haute and the 7th Street Arts Corridor an interesting and exciting place to be.
